“Among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” -John 1:26-27

John the Baptist, a great man and prophet, declares himself below the feet of Christ, unworthy to even loosen his shoes. Where then am I in the eyes of the Lord? As John’s Gospel says, Jesus stands among us, yet we do not know him. Why is that? I saw this crucifix and it held my gaze. I immediately felt that I should photograph it. Not focusing on Jesus’ face, but rather to lower myself below his feet, and gaze upwards. I wonder if John the Baptist had been a photographer, if he would have attempted a similar composition…
