Watching It Tower

I don’t know when they began this project, but when I started taking the commuter rail into South Station last summer the tower was still just a concept. Now, a year later, it has begun to take root and sprout.

I’ve enjoyed watching it grow, watching it become something. Every time I glance upon the obelisk I have a similar thought: “I’m witnessing something special.”

Have you ever seen old pictures of New York City when it was just a port city or the empty expanse of desert before Las Vegas? We humans build things, and we’ve reshaped this planet again and again. The skyscraper that is being added to the Boston skyline will be magnificent one day, and my children’s children will look at pictures such as this one thinking they are “old fashioned,” or “historic.” But to me, this is now.

We can only ever be where we are, here and in this moment. We read about the past, we make projections about the future. We video conference to other continents and we consumer photographs from across the globe, but we’re only ever here.

So be here.

Enjoy your piece of time and space. Watch the towers grow around you. And smile.

  1. Hi Joey, I too have been amazed when I make a trip through South Station and see the immense footings and structure that you can see and that is holding up the whole tower. I am reminded of the importance for a secure structure needed for human development too, and how without it we cannot rise up. Just a thought.
Happy 4th of July to you and your family!
