Want To v. Want To Have

I Want To eat three donuts.
I Want To Have eaten oatmeal and fruit.

I Want To sleep in on Sunday morning.
I Want To Have worked on my novel before the kids wake up.

I Want To watch TV after a long day at work.
I Want To Have read a book after a long day at work.

“Want” is an interesting concept. We desire pleasure and purpose, but do we “want” to do the things that lead to pleasure and purpose?

We want a master’s degree, but do we want to go to school, staying up late studying and worrying about exams?

We want to be healthy, but do we want to get 10K steps a day, consistently hit a caloric deficit, and prioritize rest and sleep?

We want a good prayer life, but do we make time for Him?

I believe that when we do something because we want to have done it, rather than because we want to do it, we are strengthening our “Will,” that part of ourselves that can overcome the short-term oriented aspects of our biology to prioritize long-term investment and growth.

Strengthen your Will. Improve your life.
