Memorial Day

This is a very special day as we honor all those who have served in the military, especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.  It is special to me personally because I think about my dad’s only brother, a man I never met, someone named Reynold.  He was deferred by his company from being drafted because of the strong contribution he was making to their efforts in designing and building equipment for our Navy during WWII.  Ultimately, he felt called to serve, to participate in the greatest challenge our country had faced to that point, and so he joined the Army.  As my grandparents were preparing for his safe homecoming when the war had ended, they learned belatedly that he was killed in the final few days of the assault on Nazi Germany.

Just a few days short of victory…

Probably because I carry his name with me, I think about his sacrifice… and in turn, about all those who experience the loss of a loved one in our defense.

Remembering… with gratitude…
