Project 47: Pinhole

This week’s project is all about mood, even though it didn’t start out that way.

My camera, as do many others, has a setting called Toy Camera (also known as Pin Hole) and let’s just say it’s not one I’d be inclined to use.  Ever.  Is anyone inclined to use it?  Exactly.  To me, it’s like the fake convertible look of cars made in the ’70s.  I mean really.

Yet here we are.

I was curious enough about it to give it a try.  I’ll admit that at first, I didn’t see much here.  Gimmicky was the thought that kept going through my mind.  Intentional vignetting and blur, darker exposure, weird greenish color cast?  Yeah, it’s a gimmick.

But as the week went on, I started to see that the setting conveys a darker, moodier feel to the image.  I began experimenting with compositions that wouldn’t work otherwise.  I started to actually feel the mood as I looked through the viewfinder and saw subjects that normally would be cheery, uplifting or at at minimum, neutral.  Yet here I was, as a result of the in camera filter, starting to see the world a little differently.
